A neighbor who has a big and beautiful plum tree was away on vacation, and what do you know, her tree was ready to be picked. So I sent her a text and asked if I could pick the ones overhanging her fence if I gave her a jar of them canned in returned. The deal was struck.
This tree is really tall, so out came my ladder. Intimidating Minnow came over to help me pick, move the ladder, pick, move the ladder, etc. I ended up with 6.25 pounds. Then we went to Chipotle and talked about fishing. Later I canned until about midnight.
So I now have 6 pints of canned plums for myself! These were the easiest things to can because I processed them as a cold pack and used only water instead of a light syrup. But their skins did split on me while processing in the water bath for 20 minutes even though I punctured each plum with a fork on opposite sides ahead of time.
I also have about a pound or so leftover, so I'm going to make a pureé for the freezer out of those. It should be enough for one special winter fruit smoothie.
I'm on the hunt for a peach tree. Someone hook me up.
